Inside Laura & Owen’s timeless family home

A rural-inspired family home in Matangi blends timeless design, modern living, and heartfelt memories
For Laura and Owen Robinson, home has always meant wide open spaces and a connection to the land. Both grew up rurally in the lush Waikato countryside, where days were spent outdoors and family was never far away. When it came time to build their own home, there was no question—they wanted that same magic for their children.

The brief
Just a stone’s throw from Laura’s childhood farm in Matangi, the couple found the perfect spot: a peaceful section and plenty of room to dream big.
That dream? A timeless, light-filled home that would evolve with their family, host memorable gatherings, and make the most of every golden sunset.
“We both have such fond memories of growing up with space to roam,” Laura shares. “We wanted to give our kids the same kind of upbringing—close to nature, with room to play and grow.”
Every corner of the home was meticulously planned to soak up sunlight at just the right time, and every detail reflected their love of simple yet sophisticated design.
“We love to entertain,” says Laura, “so a large, covered outdoor space was a must-have from day one.”

The result
A home that’s equal parts welcoming and elegant, designed to adapt with time.
“We wanted something classic, a kind of blank canvas that we can refresh as trends change. I love switching things up seasonally—whether it’s cushions, vases, or even paint—it keeps the home feeling fresh.”
From the outside in, the Robinsons’ home exudes warmth and character. Adobo’s Vulcan timber cladding in ‘Nero’ sets a striking tone, especially during the golden hour when the setting sun throws a soft, coppery glow across the facade. Paired with sharp aluminium joinery and painted Single Clay bricks in Resene Half Black White, the combination is both grounded and contemporary.

Design details
Inside, calming tones and natural textures set the scene. The polished concrete floors bounce light through the open-plan spaces, while the kitchen—complete with a reflective splashback that mirrors the ever-changing outdoor views—anchors the home beautifully.
Just behind the kitchen is one of Laura’s favourite spots.
“Even when I’m cleaning up after a dinner party, I still get to enjoy the view,” she laughs. “It makes even the not-so-fun jobs feel a little bit special.”
The home unfolds in two distinct wings: one for living, dining, and entertaining; the other for rest and retreat. The layout is clever and cohesive, with an inviting entranceway connecting the wings and multiple access points that create an easy flow between indoors and out.
From the moment you walk in, there’s a sense of calm and comfort. It’s a space that welcomes you in and invites you to stay a little longer.
